Horsemanship & Photography Workshop Retreat

We are beyond excited to welcome back to Sandwerf and Namibia international equine photographer Minh Dan Vu for our 2026 Feel and See Workshop! A fantastic opportunity to learn from Minh and explore with your camera at JD with our unique herd and in Namibia's extraordinary natural light settings!

You will enjoy some JD signature horsemanship lessons with our amazing liberty Trainer Jaqueline De Lange and learn how to live and communicate force-free and in harmony with horses during this workshop retreat. Grab this opportunity to learn from one of the world’s bests equine photography artists how to put our beauties into the right magical Namibian light with exclusive photography sessions and editing lessons with Minh.

Workshop Detailed Schedule:

Day 1 - Sunday:

Arrival Day - Enjoy a light lunch and some resting time in your luxury chalet in our tranquil Sandwerf Retreat setup before meeting Minh, Jackie and the founders of JD and Sandwerf for a Meet & Greet 3 courses Dinner at our wonderful Sandwerf Restaurant.

Day 2 - Monday:

After a refreshing breakfast we embark on a JD Stable tour and gain a good orientation of JD and Sandwerf Retreat, followed by an introduction into Minh’s work and general equine photography; a demonstration and discussion of examples of her work followed by an open round discussion of everyone's experience, dreams and goals to achieve in this workshop.

After your lunch and resting time we welcome you at JD Training Centre for a horsemanship Demonstration before we are having our first Equine Photoshoots with Minh and the JD Horses in the late afternoon light.

Day 3 - Tuesday

We are starting early at 7AM to catch the sunrise and best light of the day with a session of the herd roaming free in the African savanna guided by owner and JD founder Annika sharing her herd and equine world with you that you all know from our social Media accounts. :)

Enjoy a hot coffee and relaxed breakfast before heading into Minh's Introduction into her photography editing work!

After a delicious lunch our talented JD trainer Jackie will invite you to a group session of Bodywork and target training with our horses, big and small. Meanwhile Minh will be available at the Sandwerf Conference Centre for private questions on your own camera equipment and best suitable settings for the workshop.

We are catching the magical last light of the day with another photoshoot with our horsemanship students and their project horses in the magical open field with the focus on capturing deep connection.

Day 4 - Wednesday

Be ready for another 7AM early morning photoshoot with our young stallions at sunrise! before enjoying your breakfast in the group at the restaurant. Today we are starting our private coaching lessons with Minh and private liberty horsemanship lessons with Jackie in rotation. Additional we are having a hike with the mini horses on offer with a picnic with a breathtaking view over the African Savanna. In the afternoon you have plenty of time to practise your photography skills with our horses in the paddocks or join a drive to our safari camp with the chance to spot some giraffes and different type of antelopes. In the late light we will be creating an opportunity for a shoot with a JD horse within the context of Sandwerf's unique architecture together with Minh and Sandwerf founder and architect Leon.

Day 5 - Thursday

A fresh start into the day to continue our afternoon shooting at sunrise and according to participants special interest.

From 9:00 - 13:00 we are offering slots for private editing sessions with Minh and private one-on-one liberty Horsemanship lessons with Jackie again.

For those of you who have chosen to go on our riding safari at the end of your stay it is time to find your right equine partner for this journey with a practise riding lesson with our JD Trainers. Alternatively there is the option to join a guided hike into the field for more photo options and inspiring interaction time with the herd. In the afternoon we are having Guasha & Aromatherapy for horses on offer or you can book a safari at a nearby wildlife reserve for additional charges to spot rhinos and more exciting African wildlife.

We are having another late light photoshoot with the JD horses for sunset to capture Namibia's magnificent dust scenes.

Parallel on offer for the group: Finding riding partner for those planning to go on horse riding Safari with JD Trainer/Guide OR going out into the field as guided group with the herd to practise photography in full daylight, frame and story telling; quality time with the herd

14:00-17:00 Rotating 45 Minutes slots for private Editing & Liberty Training Sessions with Minh and Jackie

Parallel on offer for the group: group session Guasha & Aroma Therapy for Horses with JD Trainer OR external Safari option to nearby game reserve (for Safari additional charges apply)

18:00 Last light action-shoot with horses in dust with Minh guided by Annika

Day 6 - Friday

Your last opportunity to capture the most iconic JD scenes at sunrise with the herd in the field together with Minh and Annika. With some luck we will have a full JD herd galloping out of the sunrise in Namibia's magical desert atmosphere.

After a refreshing breakfast break Minh takes us to the heart of her editing work and shows us how to create deep art from your raw photos in a group lesson and demonstration from 10:00-12:30 this morning.

Interrupted only by a lunch break and an equine biomechanics lesson by Jackie after lunch.

We are closing off the editing sessions of the day with sharing our art created over the past days and an open feedback round for each other. Before dinner we are getting together for a stunning sundowner on top of the mountain on our picnic deck.

Day 7 - Saturday

The Workshop is over but your African adventure only begins! Depending on your choice you will be heading out onto your 3 days riding safari to our unique JD Safari Camp or onto our desert excursion this morning after breakfast.

Back at Sandwerf Retreat for the last night we are having a special outside dinner night with feedback and reflection discussions around the fire.

Day 10 - Tuesday

Last day - relax and enjoy Sandwerf Retreat and all it has to offer. Depending on your flight time you can book spa treatments, wool crafting lessons, cooking lessons with the chefs or simply enjoy your private mini pool at your chalet and dig into your book or private creative time until our shuttle will take you back to the airport for your flight home.

There is no specific check-out time for your chalet on your last day.

What you need to bring for the workshop:

Your Camera (advisable is a good zoom lens or zoom ability)
A laptop or tablet with Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop
No must but always lovely to have is a diary or notebook
A good attitude and spontaneous mindset towards shooting with life animals in open terrain and changing weather :)

During your stay at Sandwerf:

Accommodation:

Our peaceful and modern shaped green village provides accomodation for you during your stay in one of our unique and light chalets (single or double room chalets) ; each room single occupation and each room with private bathroom. Each chalet has a veranda with its own mini pool. (See pictures below)

Meals:

Three meals provided by our talented chef on side are included as well as water, juice, tea, coffee - extra drinks are not included and on your own account.

Transfers:
